Calling all Baseball Fans to Jupiter

The spring training season is well underway at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida. The stadium is home to two major league teams: the Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals. The spring training season begins every March and ends in April. There are almost daily training games with visiting teams. This spring the schedule includes such visiting teams as the New York Mets, the Washington Nationals, the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox. Avid baseball fans descend on Roger Dean Stadium from all over Florida to enjoy the intense rivalries of “America’s favorite pastime.” Once spring training ends, the stadium plays host to two minor league Florida teams: the Jupiter Hammerheads and the Palm Beach Cardinals.

Roger Dean Stadium is a twenty-eight million dollar “state of the art” facility. Luxury skybox seating, permanent seating and general seating are all available. Ticket packages can be purchased for both major league games and Florida State League games. Individual tickets can also be procured. There is convenient parking and a concession stand that offers a variety of “ballpark food” and drinks. To add to the fun provided by “baseball mania,” there are several special event days that take place over the spring and summer.

One of these special events is Education Day. Over the past several years, 180,000 students have participated in this experience. The event is co-sponsored by two local school districts: Palm Beach County and Martin County. Students from various schools in these districts are invited to the stadium on one of five dates in May. For six dollars, the students receive a ticket to a Florida League baseball game and lunch. If a student cannot afford this price, aid is provided. The teachers of these students are provided with an appropriate elementary or middle school curriculum which link this experience to what the students are learning in school. Math, language arts, science and social studies are emphasized.

Another popular event at Roger Dean Stadium is Scouts’ Night. On this special evening, scouts from all over Palm Beach and Martin Counties are invited to attend a minor league game. The scouts parade on to the field before the game. After the game, they participate in activities such as relay races and watch a movie projected on the large video scoreboard. Then the scouts pitch their tents and spend the night in the outfield. As might be imagined, a great time is had by all!

And speaking of great times, the “dog days of summer” provide an entertaining diversion for man’s best friend. On the second Saturday of each month during the summer, people are invited to bring their pooch to the park. There are five such days during the 2012 minor league season, and a “pooch pass” that covers all five days can be purchased for five dollars. All the proceeds from the pooch pass benefit local animal charities.

Roger Dean Stadium is less than an hour away from the Boca Raton area. It’s an easy drive up Interstate 95. A Florida spring and summer are even more delightful when there’s baseball to be savored!
